LeadMCR 2026 ideas statements: a brief overview

With LeadMCR well underway and polls already open, The Mancunion has analysed each candidate ideas statement, noting down the issues that appear and matter the most.

Tallying the data into relevant categories highlighted the trends for this year's cohort which has been compared with data from last year. 

By far, the most talked about issue is the affordability of university life, with 34 references across the statements — the number of candidates who mentioned this has gone up substantially since the past year.

With the cost-of-living crisis and rising tuition fees, it is perhaps unsurprising that this has become a priority for so many. 

Another area consistently referenced throughout the statements were issues of diversity, accessibility and underrepresentation, with 27 references overall.

Little is mentioned about university facilities (two references), unlike last year, and the quality of housing, with this only referenced four times throughout the statements.

However, the price of housing has become a larger concern for students, with rent prices referenced twice the amount of times as accommodation quality.

Other issues that resonated throughout the statements were mental health (23 references), safety on campus (16 references) and career support (11 references).

Like in the previous year, a notable point of interest is the issue of Palestine.

This has been perhaps heightened by how, last semester, the student body voted overwhelmingly in favour of cutting relations with Tel Aviv university. 

Overall, the candidates' statements covered a wide range of policies and issues, but it is up to the students to decide who's platform resonates the most.
