Whilst perhaps not being known as a city of romance, Manchester has many overlooked locations oozing with charm and individuality. For those who want to show their loved one how much they care this Valentine's but don't know where to start, The Mancunion has got you covered.

Barça, Castlefield
To start off, Barça in Castlefield. Barça is a bar that brings a slice of the Med to Manc, situated in one of the most beautiful and atmospheric areas inside the Manchester ring road. Although they do serve food, it is their location which is truly special. All around is Castlefield Wharf, retired from its days as a canal terminal when it supplied the nearby warehouses and factories, it is now a picturesque conservation area. Day, night, or twilight, there is always something beautiful to appreciate here.
Siam Smiles, Deansgate
Just a 10 minute walk away is Siam Smiles, next to the Great Northern on Deansgate Mews. This cosy restaurant has a relaxed but intimate atmosphere, as well as some killer pad kra pow. Smiles is ideal for a cinema date, with more than 20 different films being shown at the Odeon next door this Valentine's Day.
St. John's Gardens
An honourable mention is St. John's Gardens: although not somewhere for dining or drinks, it's a peaceful patch of green — ideal if you're the type for a deep conversation without the bustle of a busy bar. The site was historically a graveyard so you might want to direct your date away from the placards, unless, of course, they're into that sort of thing.
Corbières, St. Annes
Carrying along Deansgate and near St. Anne's Square, Corbières is a must to stop for a drink. This underground bar feels like the wine cellar of a tasteful record collector as here you can find "the best jukebox in the city", with the staff even curating their own monthly mixes. A free pizza comes with any purchase over £5, but get there early before they run out of dough!

Matt & Phreds, Northern Quarter
While the Northern Quarter is full of date spots and music venues, Matt & Phreds takes the cake in the romance department. Every night here you can find live jazz, blues, salsa, and more but book ahead for a table as seats are limited: anyone in heels will appreciate the thought. Even though jazz isn't everyone's cup of tea, it's worth a pop in,, even if just to lend some air of sophistication to a date. On Wednesdays, they have everything you need for the perfect night with their "It's a Date" offer — for £30 you can book a stage-side table with a bottle of wine, a pizza and a garlic bread.
Sicilian NQ, Northern Quarter
Finally, Sicilian NQ, a small star boasting quality Sicilian street food, pizza, pasta and desserts would make for an excellent Valentine's choice. Another one worth booking ahead, the menu is rife with authentic gems and has some of the best veggie and vegan Italian options in the city.
While this is just a shortlist, everyone has their own unsung hideaways to charm a partner, lover, or crush. If in doubt ask a friend — they'll know best and help put some of the pressure off so you can focus on the really important things this Valentine's day.
